GSU's 2026 Scholarship

GSU scholarships are open to members, spouses, and dependents enrolled in accredited post-secondary education.

Overview

In 2026, Grain and General Services Union has allocated $10,000 in scholarship funding to support the educational pursuits of our members and their families.

Availability will be announced on the GSU website and in the Tuesday Members’ Memo e-newsletter.

Core Eligibility Requirements

  • Union Standing: To be eligible, GSU members must have a signed union card on file with the union.

  • Frequency: Students may apply every year and may receive a maximum of one scholarship per year. There is no lifetime limit on the number of scholarships a student may receive.

  • Eligibility Period: Funding applies to the 2026 calendar year. Applicants must provide proof of registration or attendance for classes held within this year.

  • Deadline: All applications must be received on or before July 1.

1. Dependent Scholarships ($6,000 Total)

We offer three (3) scholarships valued at $2,000 each specifically for the dependents of GSU members.

  • Eligibility: Must be age 25 or younger and a dependent of a GSU member in good standing.

  • Enrollment: Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student in a diploma, degree, or certificate program at an accredited community college, university, trade school, or technical institute globally.

2. Member & Spouse Scholarships ($4,000 Total)

Funding is available for GSU members themselves or their spouses to further their education at an accredited institution globally.

  • Full-Time Students: Eligible for a $2,000 scholarship.

  • Part-Time Students: Eligible for a $1,000 scholarship.

3. Distribution of Excess Funds

To ensure the maximum benefit reaches the membership, the first $4,000 of the scholarship fund is reserved specifically for Member and Spouse applicants. Any portion of this reserved amount that is not utilized will be redirected to the Dependent Scholarship pool.

  • Award Increments: Surplus funds will be awarded to eligible dependent applicants in $2,000 increments.

  • Minimum Threshold: If the remaining surplus is less than $2,000, that specific portion of the fund will not be redirected or awarded for the current cycle.

How to Apply

Applicants must complete the appropriate form (Dependent or Member/Spouse) and submit it to GSU with the following three requirements:

  1. Letter of Recommendation: A current letter from a non-family member describing how your participation in school, extra-curricular, and/or community activities makes you a strong candidate for a GSU scholarship.

  2. Proof of Enrollment: A copy of a document from your training institute verifying your acceptance and attendance within the 2026 calendar year.

  3. Thematic Essay: A two-page essay on the chosen topic for the current year.

The Selection Process

The GSU scholarship committee meets after the July 1 deadline to determine the successful recipients. All applicants will be advised of the committee’s decision shortly after it has been made.
